Combining traditional instruments, songs, and tunes with a modern electric drive and style, The New St. George infuses timeless ballads and dance tunes of British tradition with new-fashioned pop appeal. Conceived from the superheated British folk-rock scene of the 60's that spawned such groups as Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, and nurtured in the same fertile Washington, DC folk scene that spawned Mary Chapin-Carpenter, The New St. George made their mark in music even before the release of their first album, High Tea. They have already won a loyal following with appearances on college campuses and at major festivals such as the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Mariposa Festival in Toronto and the Black Mountain Festival in North Carolina. In 1994 they swept the Washington Area Music Awards for the third consecutive year, winning WAMMIES in both contemporary and traditional folk categories for Best Group and Best Folk Recording.

From the opening track "The Steggie" through the ending notes of "The Matelot Jig" you are transported to a "anglo-Celtic-cyberspace." Nineteenth century ballads are transmuted to the 1990's with scorching dance tunes dancing with fire. On "The Mermaid" you are made aware of the perils of these mythical sirens of the deep. "Texas" pays homage to the old-timey fiddle tradition accompanied by a jazzy, middle-eastern flair. "All The Tea in India," a thought provoking song written by Jennifer Cutting, is about John Bull's tyrannization of India in the 1800's as viewed from the Indian perspective. "When a Man's in Love" showcases the luscious harmonies of Bob Hitchcock and Lisa and the innovative musical arrangements of the New St. George and "Don't You Go," the John Martyn penned antiwar song is given a heart wrenching treatment by Lisa Moscatiello.

Take this mind-expanding, lyrical music, added to sparkling state-of-the-art engineering and production by Grammy winning BIAS recording studio in Springfield, Virginia, and you've got one of the most exciting and original Anglo-Celtic-Folk-Rock releases of the decade.
