The Kingston Trio SNAPSHOT Live in Concert 1965
Hello Fellow Trio Fans, and welcome to the "Snapshot" photo link. I hope you find these rare snapshots to be as fascinating as I do.
As most of you are aware, the magic of a live Kingston Trio performance is difficult to
describe. For those who were fortunate enough to have seen an early performance by Nick, Bob and John, these photos will undoubtedly help rekindle your memories, and those who never saw them perform live will now have the opportunity to imagine yourself sitting front row center as you listen to "Snapshot" and view these photos. I’ve added a short commentary to several that I find to be of significant importance as they show things not obvious from a cursory viewing. Other are self explanatory. I hope you enjoy them all.
A brief history of these photos is also appropriate. As you are undoubtedly aware, The Kingston Trio has always been, and remains today, a big item for our friends in Japan. You may recall, from listening to the opening remarks by John Stewart on the "Snapshot" CD, that the Trio had just completed a tour of Japan shortly before the Murray State concert was performed. These photos were taken by two (then) young Japanese fans who attended one of those historic performances in Tokyo on October 4th, 1965, exactly one month prior to the "Snapshot" recording. Hence I feel confident that the instruments, hairstyles and perhaps even the striped shirts are the same as those at the "Snapshot" show.
My friends at Folk Era and I are most thankful to Tsuyoshi Okada and Takashi Toba for supplying these rare photos. They have greatly enhanced the "Snapshot" project and made it a little easier to remember or imagine how magical it was in the fall of 1965. Enjoy!
John August Lee
Always The Triofan

Here we see John doing a solo on his Blonde Neck Vega Pete Seeger banjo. With only one microphone, John would routinely hold his instrument up to the mic for increased volume. |

What a great shot of Bob with his special Martin D-28. The Martin Guitar
Company honored him by introducing a similar guitar in their catalog
recently with his signature in Mother of Pearl on the fretboard. |

Here is The Kingston Trio we all know the best. Doing what they do best. Bob on D-28, John on Vega Banjo and Nick on tenor guitar. |

No doubt about it. "The Reverend Mr. Black". |

John played a 00-21 in the studio, but in concert he used a D-28. |

"They Call The Wind Maria". John and Bob with their D-28 guitars and Nick playing bongo drums. Drama at it's finest! |

Bob taking a vocal solo. Notice that spotlight zeroing in. |

I am pleased so many of these photos have a clear view of Dean Reilly playing bass. In this shot, He was clearly "The finest bass player on stage
at this time" |

Until I saw these photos, I didn't know John ever owned a Sunburst Gibson J-200 12 string guitar. So what song is this? |

Here's another mystery photo. John on D-28, Nick with Tenor Guitar. Bob
offstage. "Ann"? But the recording features John's 12-string. |

Here is the song that started it all. Tom Dooley. Bob played plectrum banjo
on the first recording and played it in concert through 1967. |

Many have asked how they did the key change In Reverend Mr. Black. Here it
is! Slide those capos up mid-song! |
