John Stewart can no more be pigeon-holed
into a musical category than he can be described with typical music critic
lingo. To call him a singer-songwriter is inadequate. Living legend, cult
hero, American icon - each applies, but fails to capture the totality
of his work.
When Stewart started his solo career, he was wearing cowboy boots and
hat, singing the kind of country/folk/rock that has recently rocketed
a whole school of Texas songwriters - Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van
Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock,
Billy Joe Shaver - to popularity. Since then Stewart's work has evolved
to something more personal and simultaneously universal. Sketches, words,
images tell Stewart's story, but resonate like ghosts that leave a trace.
More detailed, more insightful, and more impressionistic, Stewart has
remained somewhere far ahead of where his peers are just now arriving.
